Choosing

There was never a right answer. There is a decision you can stand behind.

“What if there isn't a right decision. Only a decision I choose to stand behind?”

A lot of people are not stuck on a decision. They are stuck on wanting the decision to come with proof.

Proof would be nice. It would also mean you were never really choosing — just following the obvious. Real decisions happen precisely where the evidence runs out.

Right is decided afterwards

Almost nothing is right at the moment you choose it. It becomes right, or doesn’t, through what you do next. People who decide well are not better predictors. They are better at committing and then making the thing work.

This is why the question “what is the right choice” so often produces paralysis. It is unanswerable. “Which of these can I stand behind, including the parts I won’t like” is answerable.

The test

Take each option and imagine explaining it in two years — not to an audience, to yourself. Not the version where it worked out. The version where it cost you something. Which one can you still defend?

That is usually the one. Not because it is safe, but because it is yours.

Standing behind a decision is not the same as being sure. It means you stop relitigating it every Sunday evening.

If you are at the point where you don’t need another article, you need someone to think through the situation with you. That is the work I do.
